----------------------------------- IMPRESSIONS OF TROY NY: MARK NICKITA ----------------------------------- Over the years I’ve had a fairly steady stream of notable “New Urbanist” visitors in Troy. They come to see the place after hearing about it on my previous show with James Howard Kunstler and now through my new project, “A Small American City.” A few weeks ago, I ran across urbanist architect Mark Nickita of Detroit. He was in the area giving a talk at a Congress for the New Urbanism event in Schenectady, and was rather surprised to run into me out on the streets of Troy. But while I was thrilled to see him (having met him only at national CNU events), it’s not that surprising that he found me simply by showing up. That’s just how it is in this place. We are a people who occupy our public realm. And the city streets are our “Third Place.” After giving him a 10 cent tour of Monument Square and the adjacent blocks, I sent Nickita an email asking him a few questions about his impressions of our Small American City. Here are his answers in Q & A format on the SAC website. You may be particularly interested in his impressions of the four cities in New York’s Capital Region, which he visited during his trip. Also take note of his comments on the notion of turning certain downtown streets into pedestrian only areas. asmallamericancity/impressions-of-troy-mark-nickita/
