--- Canoeing with KIDS --- My husband and I used to go kayaking quite regularly before we had kids. But for the past couple of years our beloved kayak’s have been collecting dust in the garage. About 2 weeks ago, our 4-year old saw a kayak on top of a car and declared that she wanted to have her own Rainbow Boat. So, we decided to rent a canoe and paddle down the Brandywine. We made a reservation with Northbrook Canoe Company for an hour trip. They dropped us off upstream and then we paddled back downstream. It was the perfect first trip for our daughter. There were no dams or crazy rapids to maneuver and we had plenty of time. Our daughter sat in the middle of the canoe while my husband and I casually paddled. At one point, she decided to put her hand in the water and without even trying she caught a stick. I looked at her and the expression on her face said it all…”Let’s see what else I can catch.” That little game of hers kept her busy for a while. And in the midst of it, she also spotted a beaver on the banks. Oh, and we can’t forget about all the homes of the water fairies she found…aka the exposed root systems of all the trees along the banks. The trip was a success all around and she is ready to go again. So, if you have been thinking about taking your kids out on the water, I say go for it! Not only did our daughter have a blast, it was also very relaxing for my husband and myself. We all need a break from our busy lives and the water seems to have a special calming effect. Northbrook Canoe Company was very easy to work with. Another option is Marsh Creek Lake. And if you know of other places that rent canoes and kayaks, let us know.
