- A loved one is diagnosed with cancer: Well pray for healing. (Curious how this statement is always preceded or succeeded by a doctors consultation and treatments so expensive that they require loans and/or fundraising to cover.) - A loved one sees improvement after treatment. God heals! (Physicians and medical staff are either Gods instrument or ignored.) -Cancer advances. In our weakness, He is strong. (This is sometimes followed by statements that the doctors are idiots.) -Cancer is in complete remission. Our prayers are answered! (After years of chemo and care, the entire army of healthcare professionals gives a blank stare.) -Cancer returns and ultimately proves fatal. God called them home. Religious belief is like Silly Putty. Its simply molded into whatever shape is necessary to fit the situation. And while all who suffer from malady deserve compassion, its important that we draw a circle around the ridiculous assertions that a loving deity would allow cancer to kill his child to the potential emotional and financial ruin of all he/she leaves behind. Yes, hope is important. And belief can inform attitude, as attitude informs physical wellness. But I remain convinced that chanting to the sky isnt the best way to provide hope, care and solutions to the very human problems we face, and its important, however difficult it may be, to live and function in the real world. To take responsibility for our own care and well-being. To hold a supposedly loving god to a higher standard than, He kept the cancer from spreading to their lymph nodes.). And to focus on the men and women of medicine who daily fight the high-casualty war against cancer and disease. They are the true healers.
