- Before The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis co-star Bob Denver was signed, the role of Gilligan was offered to actor/comedian Jerry Van Dyke. He turned down the role saying this was the most ridicule plot hed ever heard. Ironically, two years later hed go on to star in one of the worst panned sitcoms ever My Mother the Car where his character communicates with his deceased mom through the radio in a jalopy that he bought with him only being able to hear her. That show lasted just one season, while Gilligan’s Island lasted three. It was greenlit for a fourth season, but CBS founder/owner Bill Paley ordered that the network not cancel Gunsmoke, so the seven castaways were taken off instead. - A year later, CBS gave star Denver a new show called The Good Guys where he played a taxi driver who was a bachelor that wishes he was married. Co-star Herb Edelman was his best friend who owned a married seaside diner owner who often wished he was a bachelor. The show lasted about a season and a half with the Skipper himself Alan Hale, Jr. joining the cast halfway through the series run. - Finally, in 1978 the castaways got off the isle in Rescue From Gilligans Island, followed by two other made-for-television movies including the final one with the The Original Harlem Globetrotters.
