:-( Having volunteered at New Beginnings for many years, I am sad but not surprised by their decision to close. I have seen the client base they are able to effectively serve erode drastically in the last few years for many reasons, and the women they did help had increasingly complicated needs, as the article states, but it is still sad to see them go. Unique and useful program that helped many, many women and babies navigate a parent or place decision and its consequences (me and my son included--we lived at New Beginnings in 1989). Seems like a sign of the times, that NB isnt closing for lack of funding or lack of dedicated staff and volunteers, or lack of a worthwhile mission, but rather for lack of actual clients who were willing and able to take advantage of a rare social service that was not a handout, but a hand up.
