- If you want a great looking butt! Squats are they way forward but you need to do them properly - If youve done a class or PT with me you know Im all about technique and form. I would rather you complete fewer slower reps than rush through your workout with bad form! Why? Its simple! youll get more out it - you will work the right muscles through the correct range of movement, stimulating them in the most effective way. It also helps prevents injury, enables you to do more (or use more weight) and reduces unnecessary stabilising actions. Press ups are a good example, the movement is designed to work your chest, shoulders and triceps. The movement occurs through elbow flexion and extension and not through hip or neck movement. More on press ups another time, today Im thinking about squats. During the squat, the body moves from a standing position into a squat - as if you are going to sit on a chair. Movement occurs at the hip, knee and ankle joints. The hip joint flexes, bending your trunk toward your legs. Flexion also occurs at the knee joints, lowering your butt down until the top part of your legs are parallel with the floor. Your legs should be shoulder width apart or a little wider and your weight should be firmly planted in your heels, not through your toes. At the bottom of the movement you should be able to wiggle your toes. You should be pushing your butt backwards into the movement and not your knees forward, so your knees should not be travelling too far forward (ie past the line of your toes) The main muscles incorporated should be your quadriceps (front of the legs) hamstrings (back of legs) and glutes (in your bum) Im seeing too many half squats or poor form squats - so get practising at home guys and perfect your squat.
