*-Illinois man admits to not seeking medical help for infant before death-* An Illinois man charged in the death of his girlfriends 5-month-old son admitted Monday to not seeking medical help for the boy. Melvin V. McNair II, 29, pleaded guilty to neglect of a dependent resulting in bodily injury, a Class C felony. He is scheduled to be sentenced March 23. He was charged in July in the death of Syrus Morgan, who died Oct. 25, 2013, at the University of Chicago Medicine Comer Childrens Hospital after he was taken off life support. According to court records, the infant had multiple skull fractures, bleeding in his brain and had several rib fractures that were starting to heal. The Cook County medical examiners office ruled the boys death a homicide. The boys mother, Siarra Morgan, is facing charges of murder, battery, neglect of a dependent resulting in death, aggravated battery, two counts of battery and two counts of neglect of a dependent. Siarra Morgan, 20, of Gary, was arrested in San Antonio, Texas, and extradited in July to Lake County. The criminal charges against Siarra Morgan are still pending. McNair gave detectives different accounts of what happened before he and his girlfriend took the boy to the hospital Oct. 22, 2013. According to court records, the infant had previously gone to the emergency room Aug. 7, 2013, and was treated for a fall that caused bleeding to the brain. In the plea agreement, McNair admits to not obtaining medical help for the boy though he observed the childs deteriorating demeanor and behavior. He also admits to seeing his girlfriend handle the child in an abusive manner. According to court records, Siarra Morgan allegedly told detectives she had shaken the infant in the past when he cried. She also told officers she picked up her son by his stomach and had scratched him in the past. elviamalagontimes/lakecountysheriffdept
