- Jody Williams. Internet Activist! For almost fifty years after World War II, the international scene dominated by the rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union. Particular concern was focused on both countries nuclear arsenals. These had the potential for devastating the northern hemisphere, and citizens of every nation felt vulnerable. Born in 1950, Williams grew up in Putney, Vermont. While not an isolated or unsophisticated community, Putney was so small that students had to go to Brattlebro to attend a public high school. Like Jane Addams, Williams was raised in a comfortable, small-town environment where her parents, one a judge and the other a housing supervisor, were respected members of the community. .............................
