--KPD alerts public of door-to-door solicitations-- LĪHUE –The Kauai Police Department is urging the public to be vigilant about individuals walking door to door to solicit business. “We have received numerous complaints from the public regarding alleged vendors that have been canvasing neighborhoods to solicit business,” stated Police Chief Darryl Perry. “While door-to-door solicitations are not illegal, and reputable businesses are known to use it as a sales tactic, it is also common for thieves to impersonate salespeople in order to case your home for a future break-in.” Police warn residents to be cautious with anyone who approaches your home unexpectedly. “Ask for identification up front; a legitimate business should have proper identification readily available,” added Perry. “If you feel you are being harassed, or if a visitor refuses to leave your property, don’t hesitate to call 911.” The Kaua‘i Police Department also offers these safety tips: • Don’t allow a stranger into your home unsolicited. • If you are interested in the product or service, consider taking down the company’s information at first visit, then schedule an appointment after you’ve done your research. • Don’t feel pressured into signing a contract or document on the spot. Read all terms thoroughly, and be sure to read the fine print. • Be a good neighbor. If you see someone in or around your neighbor’s unoccupied home, call police. Try to get a detailed description of the suspicious person or vehicle.
