- Monday Munch: Sensory preferences and aversions - I stumbled across these Crispy Fruits last week while looking for some food to use in Food Science therapy with one of my small clients. I was looking for fruit with crunch and no wetness about it. Some kids have sensory preferences that may really affect their ability to learn to like new foods. In severe cases, this may be labelled as sensory processing disorder but most of us simply have sensory preferences or aversions that we live with or learn to get around. It only becomes an issue when a sensory preference or aversion starts to interfere with our daily lives. Parents know their kids best. We can make the process of learning easier for children who are fearful of new foods by being mindful of their sensory needs. If you need help with this, Im always up for a chat! Thanks also to Nicole, OT from Gateway Therapies for the great discussion we had about this last week :) Have you noticed that your child has particular sensory preferences or aversions with food? Or maybe you do too? - Deb (ed.)
