- Night of the Creeps (1986). I was actually very pleasantly surprised by this movie. Directed by Fred Dekker (who I think his only notable credit is Monster Squad), this story follows Chris Romero, an average college student, who wants nothing more than to date what he perceives as the love of his life, Cynthia. But, when he and his friend J.D. uncovers a frozen body from the 50s, they unintentionally release a parasite from outer space that slowly takes over the people on campus. The only way I really found out about this film, is because I had heard the movie Slither had trouble with fans, because it took the premise, almost exact, for their movie. Although James Gunn will tell you his movie is more influenced by David Cronenbergs film Shivers, I will have to call him out, because the parallels between this movie and Slither are more obvious. Even the parasites that invade these college students are almost exactly like the slither creatures. I will tip my hand a little here, I do think Slither is a better and funnier film than this one, but that doesnt necessarily mean I disliked this film. I have seen a lot of horror movies for this Halloween season, but this and Dead Alive are really the only two on my list that I had real fun watching. Sure, this is a B horror movie, but the movie has a lot of cheesy fun with its premise. Not all of the jokes were that great, but when I do laugh at the jokes, I really laugh hard. I really appreciate the detail in the movie that most of our main cast of characters share the last names of famous horror film directors (I already mentioned Chris Romero, who is named after George A. Romero, and there is also a character named James Carpenter Hooper, named after John Carpenter and Tobe Hooper respectively). The acting isnt really that spectacular, but I think they do a nice job realizing what kind of cheesy horror comedy theyre making; Tom Atkins is actually the best. He plays a very serious character in a very ridiculous situation, and always begins his sentences with a cheesy saying (like Thrill Me). Although not a perfect horror comedy, it is certainly a very enjoyable film, and I had a lot of fun watching it. If you like movies like Killer Klowns from Outer Space, or Evil Dead 2, you will find a lot of enjoyment here. Recommend. https://youtube/watch?v=XW8F1boWgv0
