- Ok, Canada AM, waaayy to piss me off at 9am. They had a segment about harvesting stem cells in a "new way" for ther blood bank, specifically blood stem cells. They talked about after a woman gives birth, how the umbilical cord is clamped and then it, along with the placenta, is "just medical waste" and thrown away. BUT, they decided that after consent from the new parents, that maybe they should save all that stuff and harvest stem cells from it! Hallelujah! Idiots. If delayed cord clamping and placenta encapsulation was more widely promoted and encouraged by hospitals, then none of that would BE medical waste. The baby would get all the iron rich blood from the cord and the mom would reap huge benefits from placenta pills, including lower risk of PPD. Maybe they should try being more open to offering these choices to new moms instead of misleading them by insisting its "waste" and then offering to harvest stem cells from it to bank for others. - Janice
