- THE MONUMENTAL ALBUMS - Miles Davis - Kind of Blue, 1959 I started writing this as a comment in the Super Groups thread, but really this album changed music so much that I feel it deserves its own special recognition. The Line Up (taken from Wikipedia for accuracy) Miles Davis – trumpet (band leader) Julian Cannonball Adderley – alto saxophone, except on Blue in Green Paul Chambers – double bass Jimmy Cobb – drums John Coltrane – tenor saxophone Bill Evans – piano (except Freddie Freeloader), liner notes Wynton Kelly – piano on Freddie Freeloader Miles! Adderly! Coltrane! Evans! Chambers! Miles had already made a reputation for himself as being a genius band leader/composer by the time they did Kind of Blue, and the Classic Quintet had morphed into this ensemble over time, but this is undeniably one of THE ALL TIME GREAT ALBUMS, regardless of genre. This is the album that broke Bebop wide open and set the pace for much of its future evolution. The line in the sand between yo grannys old jazz and modern jazz. If you only have one Jazz album in your collection, its probably this one (or it should be, though I will point out at least 2 others).
