He also insisted any teachers wanting to avoid the sack, or the lowest pay grade, had to publish a newspaper article praising him. - The media of Turkmenistan is under heavy control of the state. The government funds nearly all newspapers, and criticism of the president is absolutely forbidden. State licensing policy effectively eliminates all outlets not reflecting official views. To avoid reprisal, domestic and foreign journalists engage in self-censorship. When I first read these revelations about Turkmenistan I was amused, bemused and disturbed. Reading them again now, some are feeling too close to home.
