- ZOMBIE STRIPPERS FILM FACT #1 - While on the surface Zombie Strippers appears to be a transparently low-brow affair, the story itself was based on Romanian playwright Eugène Ionescos 1959 allegorical play, Rhinoceros. In the stage play, citizens of a small French village are beset by wild rampaging rhinoceroses who appear suddenly in the town square. It soon comes to light that the towns inhabitants are themselves willingly transforming into rhinoceroses, all except the local drunkard who mysteriously manages to escape the rhinoceritis plague. As his most loyal and sensible allies submit to the trendy metamorphosis, the protagonist remains the last standing human being, troubled and alone, but staunchly determined not to become one of the wild unthinking beasts. The themes of non-conformity and individualism are overt, but the parallels are evident in most zombie films where the foolhardy, inconsiderate or unappreciative are the first to plump the ranks of the dead. Compromising ones self and integrity is certain death in the zompocalypse. To reference the play, director Jay Lee named Robert Englunds character (Ian Essko) after the playwright Ionesco. The name of his strip club is of course Rhinos, a salute to the inspirational play, but also the infamous gentlemens club chain, Spearmint Rhino. So this Saturday night when youre salivating or recoiling from the cheap thrills being thrown at you from the undead denizens of club Rhino, spare a thought for the communist allegory keeping the starch in those blood-stained g-strings.
