*** 1.7.15 - Topic of the Day... The Perfect Tone Every single one of us are on this seemingly never ending quest. The perfect tone is like the perfect mate. To each of us, it could mean very different things. We all know what we want to hear but finding it is much harder than we initially think it will be. For me, tone has to sing, be punchy, spongey but not too spongey, have volume if needed, be round but not flubby, cut through the mix likes hot knife through butter, without ever being shrill. Too much to ask? Well, Ive been getting closer for years and years to this tone and here are some secret shortcuts that have gotten me there... * 10 inch speakers. For a guitar tone (6string not drop tuned), these are a mandatory have in a main amp. They give the best part of the guitar frequency spectrum and are what I deemed as the right choice after many years and speaker experimentation. *American flavor. Im not knocking any other amps but the greatest tones for me are definitely Fender or Fender influenced. To be more specific, the blackface era. A great Marshall plexi can certainly be debated but that was inspired from a bassman circuit. * single coil pickups. For diversity and clarity they are tough to beat. P-90s are included too. They clean up so well with just the guitar volume. You can just do more with a great set of single coils. * simplicity. Thats a big one. The less I have to tweak the knobs, the happier I am. I set the knobs on the blues pearl at 12:00. Bass, treble, mid, presence, pre amp, master volume is usually cranked. These are just starting points for me. It doesnt mean it will work for you but you cant go wrong if you arent sure where to begin. Theres more but this is long enough...🎸
