#1: Soul to Squeeze by Red Hot Chili Peppers Here it is, my favorite song of all time. By my favorite band of all time. Where to begin? The best way I can describe how this song makes me feel is bliss. From the second it starts, those unmistakable Bass plucks from the undisputed master of the instrument; the Amazing Flea, a calm wave of peace washes over me. Then, John Frusciante’s wailing guitar comes in like a howling animal, and bursts of orange and blue explode everywhere, giving everything a warm glow. The tune is one of the most listenable songs the Chili’s have ever produced. But it’s the lyrics that get me, Anthony Kiedis’ poetic genius shining through once again. “I’ve got a bad disease, Up from my brain is where I bleed Insanity it seems Has got me by my Soul to Squeeze Well all the love from me With all the dying trees I scream The angels in my dream You gotta let it be Oh yeah” Simply put, I think too much.My brain is constantly fighting with my soul, and my logic and reason are slowly killing me. If I was open more to letting love in, I would be a happier person than I am, but my “insanity” keeps me at a distance. This winds me up into a bundle of nerves ready to scream along with the dying trees. Which is why the next line sung, the chorus, ends up meaning so much to me. “Where I go I just don’t know I’ve got to, got to, gotta take it slow When I find my peace of mind I’m gonna give you some of my good time” I don’t know where I’m going, or what’s going to happen to me. So I just need to slow down and enjoy the ride. And when I learn to do that, I’ll be more emotionally ready to let people in. To “give you some of my good time” I’m desperately searching for that “peace of mind” that thing within me that will, “Make my days a breeze and take away my self destruction” I realize analyzing the lyrics to a song that also includes the line “Do do do do dingle zing a dong bong Ba di ba da ba zumba crunga cong gone bad” May seem slightly pointless, but there’s a reason this is #1. It doesn’t have anything to do with a logic thing. This song chose me. I didn’t over analyze every Chili Peppers song and say “Yep, this one is the best”. Ironically, I don’t even think this is the best song by the Chili’s (That’s probably a tie between “Under the Bridge and “Californication”) But this is the song that gets me the most, that speaks to that unknown element that exisits within all of us. The soul. And that’s where music lives. Not on the page, or in a CD or a computer, or an amplifier or keyboard or guitar or harpsichord or kazoo. It exisits in the ether of reality. What some people attribute to god or spirituality, THAT’s where music exisits. It’s where it came from when someone picked up a pen and began writing a melody, and it’s where it goes when the song is finished. And I’d like to think that one day, we’ll all end up there to. In a place filled with blue’s and oranges. A place where love smiles on us all. And when I find that peace of mind I’m gonna keep it till the end of time. Thank you all so much for reading and enjoying 100 Songs for 100 Days. I hope I enlightened a few people to the existence of some new artists and kept the love of music flowing. Have a great New Years Eve and here’s all the best to 2015.
