Active Ministry) Matt. 7:21-24 Matt 7:21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven; but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven. Matt 7:22 “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ Matt 7:23 “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.’ Matt 7:24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine, and acts upon them, may be compared to a wise man, who built his house upon the rock. (Noah Webster’s 1828 Dictionary of American English) ACTIVE, a. [L. activus.] … 3. Busy; constantly engaged in action; pursuing business with vigor and assiduity; opposed to dull, slow, or indolent; as an active officer. It is also opposed to sedentary, as an active life. 4. Requiring action or exertion; practical; operative; producing real effects; opposed to speculative; as, the active duties of life. MINISTRY, n. [L. ministerium.] The office, duties or functions of a subordinate agent of any kind. 1. Agency; service; aid; interposition; instrumentality. He directs the affairs of this world by the ordinary ministry of second causes. 2. Ecclesiastical function; agency or service of a minister of the gospel or clergyman in the modern church, or of priests, apostles and evangelists in the ancient. Acts 1. Rom 12. 2 Tim 4. Num 4. (International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, 1915) Work; Works (International Standard Bible Encyclopedia) wurk, wurks: To work in the Old Testament is usually the translation of `asah, or of pa`al (of the works both of God and of man), and work (noun) is most frequently the translation of ma`aseh, or melakhah; in the New Testament of energeo, ergazomai (and compound), with ergon (noun). The word works (erga) is a favorite designation in John for the wonderful works of Jesus (5:36; 10:38; 15:24, etc.; miracles to us, works to Him). Works is used by Paul and James, in a special sense, as denoting (with Paul) those legal performances by means of which men sought to be accepted of God, in contradistinction to that faith in Christ through which the sinner is justified apart from all legal works (Rom 3:27; Rom 4:2; Rom 4:6, etc.; Gal 2:16; Gal 3:2; Gal 3:5; Gal 3:10), working through love (Gal 5:6; 1Thess 1:3), and is fruitful in all truly good works, in which Christian believers are expected to abound (2Cor 9:8; Eph 2:10; Col 1:10; 2Thess 2:17, etc.). When James speaks of being justified by works as well as by faith (2:14-26), he has in view those works which show faith to be real and vital. Dead works avail nothing (compare Heb 9:14; Heb 10:24). Judgment is according to works (Mt 16:27, the Revised Version (British and American) deeds, margin Greek: `doing praxis; Rom 2:6; 1Pet 1:17, etc.), the new life being therein evidenced. A contrast between faith and good works is never drawn in the New Testament. See, further, JUSTIFICATION. (Digital, The MacArthur Bible Commentary, 2005, NKJV) Pg. 1615 MATTHEW “7:21 Not everyone who says…but he who does. The faith that says but does not do is really barren unbelief (cf. v. 20). Jesus is not suggesting that works merit salvation but that true faith will not fail to produce the fruit of good works. This point is also precisely the point of James 1:22-25; 2:26.” “7:22 have we not prophesied…cast out demons…and done many wonders. Note that far from being totally devoid if works of any kind, these people were claiming to have done some remarkable signs and wonders. In fact, their whole confidence was in these works—further proof that these works, spectacular as they might have appeared, could not have been authentic. No one so bereft of genuine faith could possibly produce true good. A bad tree cannot bear good fruit (v.18).” “7:23 lawlessness. All sin is lawlessness (1 John 3:4), i.e., rebellion against the law of God (cf. 13:41).” “7:24-27 The house represents a religious life; the rain represents divine judgment. Only the one built on the foundation to God’s Word stands. This obedience calls for repentance, rejection of salvation by works, and trust in God’s grace to save through His merciful provision. See notes on James 1:22-25.” If you would like to start developing a relationship with Jesus Christ click the Manzanita Baptist Church’s Web Page link bellow. manzanitabaptist.org/ John 3:16 Num. 6:24-26
