$100K Spent Planning New NDSS in Nanaimo A consultants report is calling for the construction of a new secondary school on the site of the Nanaimo District Secondary School to be completed in two phases. As part of the Nanaimo-Ladysmith school districts long-range facilities plan, both the aging Woodlands Secondary School and NDSS were scheduled to be closed in 2017 with the students from both schools attending a new state-of-the-art facility that will be constructed on the NDSS site. The approximately $100,000 report by the Cornerstone Architecture and Planning Group proposes that a new building big enough to house all the students from Woodlands (about 620) be constructed adjacent to the current NDSS building, which would remain open temporarily, in the first phase of the project. Phase two of the plan would see the construction of a new secondary school for approximately 1,900 students on the 16-hectare site that would incorporate the new building from phase one, followed by the demolition of the NDSS building. The large 16-hectare site, which is bounded by Third Street, Wakesiah Avenue and Fourth Street, includes the NDSS building and fields, the District Administration Centre and Operations Centre, the Rotary Bowl and Serauxman Stadium. Its the districts largest single parcel land asset and is currently home to one of its largest schools, NDSS, which has a student population of approximately 1,000 students. The report also proposes that the District Operations Centre, which includes the districts machine shops, facilities department and the school bus depot, be moved to a new site, but the District Administration Centre does not necessarily have to be moved. As for the Rotary Bowl, the report recommends that the district work with the City of Nanaimo, user groups and other stakeholders on its redevelopment to ensure it meets the many needs of the community, while noting that this will have an impact on current uses. As for the time lines of when the work on the construction of the new school would begin, Turin said its still too early in the process to determine that as much still depends on public feedback on the project and when the money would become available.
