$100MILLION FOR INFRASTRUCTURE WORKS: President John Mahama has secured a $100million grant from the United Arab Emirates’ Abu Dhabi Development Fund for the construction of infrastructure projects. The UAE Deputy Minister for Economic Affairs H.E. Al Gaith announced his Kingdom’s offer during a meeting with President Mahama in the Presidential Villa in Akosombo in the Eastern Region of Ghana. H.E. Al Gaith is in Ghana with a fourteen (14)-member business and government delegation on a reciprocal visit to President Mahama’s February visit to Abu Dhabi. The $100million facility will be utilized by government for various infrastructure projects of its choice and is available to be immediately accessed. Ghana has a huge infrastructure gap, which government is working to close with the establishment of a Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF). The meeting also finalized discussions for the construction of a new 350MW combined cycle power plant that will also produce 100,000 cubic litres a day of desalinated water. This is a follow-up to decisions reached during President Mahama’s February visit and discussions on Ghana’s energy needs. The project, which is achievable in a total of thirty-three (33) months, is being executed by the Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA). The first 100MW will be ready in 12 months, another 100MW will follow in 8 months and a steam turbine generator in another 13months. TAQA currently has a 90% stake in Takoradi 2 (TICO 2) plant at the Takoradi Thermal Plant in Aboadze. The 220MW plant is being converted form a simple-cycle to a combined cycle facility, and will increase the generating capacity of the facility from 220MW to 330MW with no increase in fuel consumption.
