£10m funding for historic towns Story cut from Irvine Herald. Nov 19 2013 A host of Scotlands historic towns are set to benefit from a £10 million fund to help improve conservation and regeneration. The Historic Scotland scheme has provided £26 million since 2007 to encourage groups to invest in their historic environment whilst helping to stimulate economic regeneration. In the last round of funding, Kirkwall, Elgin, Falkirk, Parkhead Cross and Banff were among the areas that benefited with projects funded to repair and develop town centres and monuments, and train people in traditional craft skills. The funding is allocated to local authorities by Historic Scotland and there have been five application rounds to the scheme over the last eight years. Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop announced the latest £10 million round will open to applications in the new year. It is hoped that the funding will continue to be a catalyst to attract funding from other sources. In its first year £18.6 million was invested in communities following £6.7 million from the Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS). Ms Hyslop said: This investment will build on the considerable benefits that CARS is already delivering for communities across Scotland since 2007. It will help reinvigorate our villages, towns and cities, and give people a sense of place and pride in their surroundings. Investment in our historic environment is key to contributing to an improved quality of life for many people across Scotland. Not only does CARS breathe new life into our communities, it is instrumental in stimulating economic growth through new employment opportunities and promoting traditional skills as well as boosting the local tourism industry. The scheme is open to l ocal and national park authorities, community groups and authorities.
