#11: Biko by Bloc Party After my discovery of Bloc Party through my friend Lindsay, I went out and bought the first album of theirs I could find, 2008s Intimacy. To say I was disappointed is perhaps not the right word, confused works slightly better. To this day, “Intimacy” is not an easy listen. The title is almost Ironic, as a lot of the songs are heavily produced electronic tracks with lots of pounding guitars and thumping bass. But then, right there at Track #4, we get the one song that suits the title perfectly, and remains in my opinion, the bands best work. “Biko” is a tender ode to a dying lover, from someone who feels utterly helpless in a desperate situation. Surrounded by unknown forces from all angles, the refrain of “Toughen Up, This World isn’t kind to Little things”, is a desperate cry from someone who’s near the end of their life, begging their last remaining tie to the earth to “Be Strong For Us”. The simple chorus with its few guitar chords played over and over again provide a chilling accompaniment to the tune, and even when it descends into Bloc Party’s usual techno styling’s near the middle, It all still fits the tune perfectly. It’s a beautiful song for anyone who feels lost, with a wonderful message that no matter how bleak things may seem at times, you don’t need to go through it alone.
