#12: Flume by Bon Iver Few songs create such an instant and complete mood as efficiently as the opening track on Bon Iver’s debut LP “For Emma, Forever Ago” The cover art is a simple shot of a window, the top of a tree visible, the rest covered by a thick layer of condensation. It’s a beautiful and stark image, one that conjures up feelings of melancholy and solitude. If viewed while listening to “Flume” however, you are witness to the perfect mix of image and sound. “Flume” is one of the most heartbreakingly tender songs ever recorded, and Justin Vernon’s impossibly high falsetto takes you to a place you possibly have never been before and weren’t necessarily sure you ever wanted to go. “For Emma, Forever Ago” is the result of a breakup, and Vernon’s subsequent trip to a cabin in the woods by himself to record an entire album’s worth of material. Everything about “Flume” is so natural and relentlessly un-complicated; all the way down to the complete breakdown in the middle of the song. You almost think for a second that the song will end on a very ambivalent note, and yet then it comes back stronger than ever. It’s a chilling little piece of work.
