=========12 Jyotirlingams======== “Om Namah Shivayah” Dear Devotees, as you might be knowing about the Jyotirlingam, which are one of the most auspicious places of worships for all Hindus. The energy of Lord Shiva is present on all those places. There are 12 main Jyotirlingams. Breif Description: 1.Shri Somnath: ------------------ Place: Gujarat Prabhas Patan, Saurashtra Somnath is the first amongst the holy shrines and traditionally, the Dwadash Jyotirlinga pilgrimage begins with the Somnath Temple. It is the prime abode of Lord Shiva and is considered to be holiest of all the Jyotirlingas. The temple was destroyed and re-built sixteen times, is held in reverence throughout India and is rich in legend, tradition, and history. It is located at Prabhas Patan (Somnath - Veraval) in Saurashtra in Gujarat. 2. Shri Mallikarjuna: -------------------------- Place: Mahaboob nagar District,Andhra Pradesh Srisailam Mallikārjuna, also called Śrīśaila, is located on a mountain on the river Krishna. Srisailam, in Mahaboob nagar District in Andhra Pradesh enshrines Mallikarjuna in an ancient temple that is architecturally and sculpturally rich.It is one place where Shakti peeta and Jyotirlingam are together. Adi Shankara composed his Sivananda Lahiri here 3. Shri Mahakaleshwar ---------------------------- Place: Ujjain,Madhya Pradesh. Ujjain (or Avanti) in Madhya Pradesh is home to the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga temple. The Lingam at Mahakal is believed to be Swayambhu, the only one of the 12 Jyotirlingams to be so. It is also the only one facing south and also the temple to have a Shree Yantra perched upside down at the ceiling of the Garbhagriha (where the Shiv Lingam sits).It is one place where Shakti peeta and Jyotirlingam are together 4.Shri Omkareshwar Place: Madhya Pradesh Island in the Narmada River Omkareshwar is situated in Madhya Pradesh on an island in the Narmada River . it has two temples Jyotirlinga Omkareshwar and the Mamaleshwar temple. Adding to the divinity of this holy shrine, the Island where this temple is situated is of “ॐ” Shape. The legend says once upon a time there was a great war between Devas and Danavas(demon), in which Danavas won. This was a major setback for Devas and hence Devas prayed to Lord Shiva. Pleased with their prayer, Lord Shiva emerged in the form of Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga and defeated Danavas. Yet in another legend the Great king of Ishvaku Dynasty “Mandhata”(The ancestor of Lord Ram) worshiped Lord Shiva until he appeared in Shiv Linga here. 5. Shri Kedarnath ----------------------- Place: Himalya, Uttarkhand Kedarnath in Uttarakhand is the northernmost of the Jyotirlingas. Kedarnath, nestled in the snow-clad Himalayas, is an ancient shrine, rich in legend and tradition. It is accessible only by foot, and only for six months a year. Legends: ---------- Legend has it that Parvati worshipped Kedareshwar to unite with Shiva as Ardhanareeswarar. Kedara Munivar is also said to have established this shrine visited by the Pancha Pandavas. Legend also has it that Nara and Narayana - two incarnations of Vishnu practised severe penances at Badrikashramam, in front of a Shivalingam fashioned out of earth. When Shiva appeared in front of them, they requested him to take up a permanent abode as a Jyotirlingam at Kedarnath. 6. Shri Bheema Shankar ------------------------------ Place: Pune, Maharastra Bhimashankar Jyotirling Temple is situated in the ghat region of the Sahyadri hills in the village of Bhavagiri, 50-km north west of Khed, near Pune in Maharashtra. Bhima Shankar Temple lies on the banks of the river Bhima. Bhimashankar is also the source of the river Bhima, which flows southeast and merges with the Krishna River near Raichur Legends: ----------- At this place, Lord Shiva, finished, the demon Bheema who was the son of Kumbhakarana, the younger brother of Ravana. By request of all deities and Narada, Lord Shiva made this place his abode as one of the jyotirlinga. Although two places with same name One in Uttaranchal and one in Orrisa bear same name and considered as Bheemshankar by local people. But this one near Pune is taken as the actual Bheemshankar. 7. Shri Kashi Vishwanath: -------------------------------- Place: Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. This is one of the holiest of shrines for Hindus and one of the main Jyotirlinga. This is believed to be the dearest place of Lord Shiva and anybody who prays and worships Vishweshwar with devotion attains all his desires and one who incessantly recites his name attains all siddhis and finally gets liberated. 8. Shri Trimbakeshwar ---------------------------- Place: Nasik, Maharastra. Maharashtra Trimbakeshwar, Near Nashik Trimbakeshwar Temple, near Nasik in Maharashtra, is a Jyotirlinga shrine associated with the origin of the Godavari river. Legends: --------- According to Shiv Purana, it is because of the earnest request of Godavari, Gautam Rishi and other gods that Lord Shiva agreed to reside here and assumed the famous name Trimbakeshwar. 9: Shri Baidyanath Place: Deoghar, Bihar. Legends: ---------- As per legends Lord Shiva allowed to carry Shiva Linga to Lanka on the condition that he should not put it down, else he will be situated there forever. In the process of Ravana relieving himself, the Shiva Linga was put down on earth by Lord Shri Vishnu appearing as Bramhan. 10 Shri Nageshwaram ------------------------ Place: Near Dwarka, Gujrat. Legends: --------- Legend has it that a devotee by name Supriya, was attacked by a demon Daaruka, while in a boat and that the demon imprisoned him along with several others at his capital Daarukaavana, where he resided with his wife Daaruki. Shiva appeared in the form of a Jyotirlingam and vanquished the demon with the Paasupata Astram. 11. Shri Rameshwar Place:Tamilnadu Tamil Nadu Rameswaram Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu is home to the vast Ramalingeswarar Jyotirlinga temple and is revered as the southernmost of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines of India. It enshrines the Rameśvara ("Lord of Rama") pillar. Legends: ---------- This is the place whre Lord Ram, performs the prayers for Lord Shiva. He built bridge between Shri Lanka and Bharat to let his Army cross over the sea to rescue his wife Devi Sita from the captivity of Ravana. 12. Shri Grishneshwar ------------------------- Place: Aurangabad, Maharastra. Legends: ----------- Lord Shiva agreed to make his abode due to the pure devotion of wife Ghushma of a noble person Brahmavetta Sudharm. Due to her devotion, she able to get her child alive who was killed by none other than her own sister out of jealousy. ----------------------------------------------------------- This is very breif description.
