**150 YEARS AGO** Confederate civilians in Petersburg and Richmond continued organizing their New Years Day dinner to send to Confederate soldiers defending the two cities. The idea emerged after reports about the Thanksgiving dinner sent to the Army of the Potomac [which we chronicled on our page here back at Thanksgiving time]. The Petersburg Daily Express reported: The following contributions in aid of the proposed New Years dinner to the soldiers of General Lees army, were left in the office of Maj. D. B. Bridgford, yesterday[ December 28]: Britton, Todd & Co, $50; A.F. Crutchfield & Co, $50; An Unknown Lady, $50; Mrs. H. H. Potter, $50; Lemuel Peebles, $150; Master DArcy Paul, $50; Surgeons and Attachees of the Confederate States Hospital, Petersburg, through Dr. John T. Kilby, Surgeon in charge, $355. A Committee, consisting of Messrs T. T. Brooks, C. F. Collier, Daniel Dodson and Jos. B Dunn, waiting upon the citizens yesterday and succeeded in raising an aggregate of five or six thousand dollars. We were unable to get possession of the list last evening, and consequently cannot publish the individual contributions this morning. In a separate article, the editors reminded readers that a Grand Tableaux Entertainment was going to be held at Mechanics Hall on the night of the 29th. The students at Nora Davidsons School were putting on the program and the proceeds appropriated to the purchase of the New Years dinner. The editor demanded a tremendous turn out at the Hall, and let the soldiers have as large a benefit as possible. Men in the Army of Northern Virginia were now looking forward to the dinner of support. Stay tuned in the coming days for more on the pending New Years Day dinner.
