#16, October 16. Cujo, 1983. My fourth favorite Stephen King adaptation (my second favorite is Stand By Me which wont be on this list since it isnt horror; what could the other two be?...wait and see), and the movie King himself says is his favorite (source Stephen King at the Movies by Jessie Horsting), Cujo tells the story of three breakdowns, Donna and Vic Trentons marriage, Donnas Pinto, and Cujo, a 200-pound St. Bernards, sanity. King says this movie keeps his spirit in his work and is a dumb slugger of a movie that stands there and keeps punching. I can dig that. Certain aspects of the book had been changed or omitted (like the spirit of a character from The Dead Zone being linked to Cujos madness, more insight to Cujos owners, and the ending). Two big aspects of the ending that were changed were the fate of one of the characters and the follow-up to what happened later with the Trentons and with Cujos owners. But I think it works just fine. The best aspects of the movie are Dee Wallaces performance, the brilliant job by the animal trainers, making Cujos decent to madness completely believable, and Jan De Bonts skilled cinematography (particularly the 360 camera and the bedroom scene at the beginning). It should be a boring movie considering the story is essentially a dog waiting for a woman to step out of a car but it works. The dog attacks on four of the characters is pretty frightening but, for my money, the two attacks on the car itself are savage and terrifying. The bottom line is that it is a simple movie but it works. It is my second favorite animal run amok movie. Number one is pretty high on the list. https://youtube/watch?v=v0k21yeVMbM
