The book is in Very Good condition, with a circular imprint on the front board and light pencil writing on the front endpaper. Monster Men was published by A.C. McClurg & Co. on Mar. 15, 1929. They did not reprint this title so any book with their name on the spine is a first edition. The book cover is a light brown and the lettering is dark green. The illustration on the dust jacket was done by J. Allen St. John. He also illustrated the title page. A total of 5,000 copies were printed. Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) was an American author best known as the creator of Tarzan and Mars adventurer John Carter. Burroughs was born in Chicago and lived for many years in Oak Park, a suburb of Chicago. By 1911, he was working as a pencil sharpener salesman and began to write fiction. He read a lot of pulp fiction and decided that he could do better. Although he had never written before, his first story was serialized in the February to July 1912 issues of The All-Story. It was published as a book by A.C. McClurg in 1917 and entitled A Princess of Mars. Besides Tarzan, Burroughs also wrote popular science fiction and fantasy stories involving adventurers transported to various planets (Mars and Venus), lost islands, and into the interior of the hollow earth in his Pellucidar series, as well as westerns and historical romances. Tarzan remains one of the most successful fictional characters to this day and is a cultural icon.
