21. The Who - The Rock. 1973 …Well really the entire side 4 of the Quadrophenia album. When Doctor Jimmy washes away and the feel changes from aggression to reflection. The thunderous roll of drums, the waves against the rocks, the distant horns sound and the wings of birds take flight; every single time I listen to this track it set all the hairs on arms and neck to stand up, like Pavlov’s dogs with the bell, just thinking of it I can feel them rising right now. I want this to be the final music I every hear when the time comes. To get it, you need to listen to the whole story, the full album. Or at least sample it by listening to side 4 (Doctor Jimmy, The Rock and Love Reign Oer Me to get an idea of the full dynamics of the work of art!). The Rock combines the four different themes within Quadrophenia, using the Bell Boy theme as the chord sequence, the Helpless Dancer theme as the melody, the Is It Me? theme as a lead (played on guitar and synthesiser), and the keyboard part to Love Reign Oer Me as a countermelody. The whole song abruptly ends on a downbeat layered with the sound of thunder and descends into Love Reign Oer Me proper. The album explores four aspects of one character, exemplified by the members of The Who: * A tough guy, Helpless Dancer (Roger Daltrey) * A romantic, Is It Me? (John Entwistle) * A bloody lunatic, Bell Boy (Keith Moon) * A beggar, a hypocrite, Love Reign Oer Me (Pete Townshend)
