#25. Annabel Lee (Poe Did Not Know You) O Annabel, Like you I have a weakness for serpents Like all sunshine does, Like all makers of warmth. Halfway across the sky you twinkle with old light. I see my own glow in yours. And I dream you, in my fitful slumber Another daughter I wish to blanket away from the gnarled talons of the world. I dream you in an ocean at midnight When even the softest waves turn sinister and you float face-down. And it seems so unreasonable to me That your eyes could swell with water And your face swell with lash And your heart swell to bursting. O Annabel, leave the kettle running Leave the fridge door wide open Pack your things and make haste for the sunset, Before the darkness catches up to you and soaks you in shadow. This world too harsh for skin like yours, That reddens up so willingly That keeps scar lines like tally marks. O Annabel, Like you I have a weakness for poetry For swallowing the wickedness of the world and making music of it. Someday it will devour you instead. There will be no grand memorial No drums, or flag draped on coffin wood No voices to make the hymns you used to sing. But I will plant flowers in your grave, and visit you on grey mornings. O Annabel, What an ugly day that will be…
