It was developed in Japan in the 16th century. The word Raku means joy or happiness. First the piece is heated to a red-hot temperature. While the raku pottery piece is still hot and glowing, it is placed inside a metal can full of combustible materials. The combustible material immediately ignites and the container is then closed. The heat emitted from the raku pottery causes these materials to catch on fire. The piece is then smoked inside the container. As the fire consumes the oxygen within the can, it also draws the oxygen out of the raku pottery and its glaze. It is this stage that creates the unique look of raku pottery. During this time, the glaze reacts with various elements in the container, creating flashes of color and a shiny luster which produce a range of finishes including striking metallic and a beautiful, crackle finish. The resulting patterns and colors are unpredictable, as they are created through the natural process of oxygen removal. Raku produces extraordinary results which cannot be predicted. The mixture of different temperatures and a broad range of chemical elements make Raku pottery special as each piece is unpredictably unique.
