[29 AUG 1983] A heavy rocket, mortar, and artillery attack on 24th MAU positions on the eastern side of Beirut International Airport resulted in two Marines killed in action and 14 Marines wounded in action. Marines retaliate with 155mm artillery. Alpha Co 1/8 and its supporting elements were impacted the heaviest. Singleton, USMC * Cpl John R. Weant, USMC On this same day in a separate incident, EOC Eugene Cole, USN was wounded on Green Beach, Beirut, while attempting to spot positions of hostile forces. He was awarded the Purple Heart on April 19, 1984.
