#3: The Freshmen by The Verve Pipe The song of a thousand high school prom dances, which is wonderfully ironic given its context. A tender tale of lost relationships, suicide, bad decisions, and the ignorance of youth. A more beautifully penned song about regret you will not find anywhere, and one of those songs where it took me forever to learn anything about the band who wrote it. Surprisingly, The Verve Pipe are an incredibly decent band, with many other great tracks (I highly recommend the songs “Half a Mind” and “Penny is Poison), who never really got bigger than this. (They now make Kids music if you can believe that). A sweet melody and a sorrowful voice, sparse stringwork on a guitar, and a haunting chorus. For the life of me, I cannot remember when a song has spoke to me more… …oh, that right. The next two.
