#33: “We Shall Be Free” Timely video: vimeo/8515766 It became clear that I wasn’t going to be able to continue homeschooling the boys for much longer. I was drained. We had made so much progress, but, well, the thing is, once I realized who I was and what I wanted, what our children needed, what Greg wanted., it wasn’t at all where we were at that point in time. Discussions began slowly, I refused to send the boys to the district school. Greg and I both longed for the life we had dreamed of before marrying…a life “in the country,” away from miles of subdivisions, strip malls, and traffic lights. We wanted our boys to attend a school that respected their rights and safety as well as their personhoods, and if the boys learned “bookwork” while they were there, then that was good too. We wanted us all to have the freedom to explore, experiment, succeed, fail, learn from our experiences and feel secure enough to try again or try something else. We sold our house within days of putting it on the market, loaded up what was important to us and gave the rest away. We were truly starting over. We lived with Greg’s parents for 9 months while building our house. We were extremely grateful for their generosity, but having our unconventional family of four living in one bedroom while trying to fit into a retired couple’s way of life is not something I ever want to repeat again. It was a meaningful experience for all of us though, giving me insights into how Greg grew up and the grandparents’ daily insights into the boys and their differences. Building our house was so exciting, but demanding. I didn’t know at the time that the builder and his wife were heading towards divorce, but I found myself not only performing clean up and basic jobs such as painting, but also having to keep everything straight and somewhat on task. I designed our kitchen and bathrooms; and I scoured the area for salvaged sinks, faucets, cabinets, beds, dressers, floor tile, etc. I still am very proud that Greg and I had such an important part in making our dream true, and am so thankful for the friends and family who supported us and helped make it all a reality. #garthbrooks #truelove
