#373 “Jesus loves me, this I know” (Jesus loves me) W: Anna Bartlett Warner (1821-1910); V.2,3, David Rutherford McGuire (1929-1971) M: William Batchelder Bradbury (1816-1868) Lyricist Anna Bartlett Warner’s family started off wealthy but were hit hard by the depression of 1837 so, in true Victorian fashion, she and her sister Susan (who penned “Jesus Bids us Shine”) set to conducting Bible classes for West Point Cadets and writing hymns to add to the family income. Susan asked her sister Anna to come up with a poem to insert in a novel she was writing; a poem of comfort to a dying child. “Jesus Loves Me” was the result. Anna didn’t originally write it with a refrain; that was added by composer William Bradbury. He had been a student of the famous Lowell Mason in Boston and an enthusiastic teacher of music in the early Victorian vogue for Singing Schools. He really found his niche composing for, and working with, children and sold over three million copies of his most popular books. William Bradbury, the composer, started out as a Baptist and later in life attended a Presbyterian church. His widow explained, “He was not strict¬ly sec¬tar¬i¬an in his views, oft¬en say¬ing he be¬longed to the child¬ren’s church, mean¬ing that wher¬ev¬er he could meet with child-ren and do them good he felt at home.” This is a bit different! youtube/watch?v=kljvGJPuGFM
