#4: Bad as They Seem by Hayden Paul Hayden Desser is the singer/songwriter who I find to be the most personally frustrating. His debut 1995 album “Everything I Long For” is one of my favorite albums, with him alternating between a barely there sweetly sung falsetto and a gravelly, hell beast of a growl. The songs on the album are clever and unique, from the short story “Skates” to the heartbreaking “You We’re Loved” to the terrifying “Driveway”. But there’s also a sense of humor among the seriousness, and it instantly made him a Canadian musician whos career I was eager to follow. And then…a whole bunch of nothing. Oh, he still released albums, he’s up to 6 now, but something happened. Gone were those interesting, weird little tracks and instead, we got a mopey, whiny crooner who’s breathy delivery of songs about nothing instantly put me to sleep. I kept getting his albums, hoping that some of that early magic might creep back in, but I was always disappointed (The closest I got was a single track on his album “The Place Where We used to Live” called ‘Let’s Break Up”, which is pretty fun). Eventually, I gave up, but it doesn’t stop my enjoyment of “EILF”, and in particular, the very first song on the album. “Bad As They Seem” is brilliant in its simplicity, and strikes a tender nerve in me in its subject matter. Obstensively about a guy who can’t be happy with what he has, it sums up perfectly the wants and needs that I also share. My own emotional issues are what I believe keep me from finding that special someone, and when Hayden sings, “What do I do this for, Got to get Out some more, Go down to the grocery store, Meet someone I’ll adore. Someone who’ll make me laugh, Someone to be my better half Keep me warm under the sack Share with me my midnight snack” Well, that’s just about the most perfect example of love I can put into words, and exactly what I am looking for in life as well. I’ll never stop wishing Hayden was as good as he was when he began. “Bad As They Seem” is a perfect song, and it’s only due to it’s creators lack of a follow up that it makes #4.
