#42 Playing music with Rob and our band was great for me. We werent terribly good, but we got along ok and we tried to be entertaining when we played. I met a girl and finally found a reason to move out of my parents house. Unfortunately, she and I were a horrible fit, but I stuck it out because I was no longer living at home and I could finally be me without my parents interjecting about being disappointed that I wasnt at church or wondering why my hair was getting so long. Jen was a terrible girlfriend, but I was also a pretty lousy boyfriend. We met and I helped her cheat on her boyfriend, a rugby player for the UofO who outweighed me by at least 40 pounds. I found out pretty quickly that it was 40 pounds of angry, broken hearted muscle. I was fortunate that I could talk to people as I probably avoided a much deserved beating. But that didnt stop us from hooking up and becoming a couple. As soon as I moved in, we began fighting. I was in love, but I was merely a place holder for her. It wasnt all that uncommon for her to leave for days at a time and then come back to me. It wasnt until later that I found out she was cheating on me, but I was pretty committed to staying out of my parents house, so I put up with it. When she wasnt there, I could invite my friends over to hangout and listen to music or practice. When she was there, we screamed at each other and she told me she hated me. I didnt really care, though, because I was finally living on my own, with a full time job, and playing music. I had no desire to attend college because that meant making a decision on where my life would eventually lead. I had zero interest in anything other than what was immediately in front of me. So, I hung out with my friends, played music, and occasionally fought with Jennifer. She eventually put me on notice that she was moving back to Colorado and I was not disappointed to see her go. The problem was, though, that I didnt have any place to live, so I eventually landed back at my parents house. It worked out ok because I started paying rent to get them off my back about my night life. The part that didnt work out was that I was terribly irresponsible and blew off things like car insurance and traffic citations. The former eventually led to the latter becoming a much bigger deal than it should have, but nobody would have accused me of being all that wise in those days. I was headstrong and with my newly found punk rock attitude, I didnt have to give a shit what anyone said about me. I could dress how I wanted, act how I wanted, and none of it mattered because I had a job to go to and band to play in. Rob was a great influence in music for me. Being that he was a college student, he had an ear for what was new and popular with the kids. We werent all that far apart in age, but when one is a college kid and the other worker bee, there was sometimes a disconnect in musical tastes. Still, Rob introduced me to some fantastic music which I might have missed if not for his eclectic and youthful musical interests. One of those things was a band that combined a horn section playing ska, while the guitars, bass and drums hit you in the face with metallic overtones. Mighty Mighty Bosstones quickly became a favorite of mine. Awfully Quiet - Mighty Mighty Bosstones youtube/watch?v=DjMnUk6VWVs
