The UPA Government proposed direct cash transfers to beneficiaries of various government schemes and initiatives. This led to the AADHAR project, biggest biometric project in the world giving UIDs to Indians After having publicly trashed this far reaching “Aadhar” card scheme, the BJP is now promoting the scheme for the same reasons that the congress brought it for. After having questioned the very validity and stake of any state governmentin Aadhar, the Modi govt. is now talking about it as a tool that will help the finance minister reduce subsidy burden by Rs 2000 Cr. BJP stand as opposition on AADHAR and Financial Inclusion: November 28, 2012, Shri Prakash Javdekar said ”Cash transfer is not a game changer. It is game being played with poor people”.. It (Direct Benefit Transfer) is an attempt by the government to fool people before elections,.. While people are reeling under inflation, Congress is only making efforts to take political mileage for nothing”… he added. On 8th April, 2014 in an election rally in Karnataka, the State where Shri Nandan Nilekani was contesting, Shri Modi claimed that the UPA’s AADHAR scheme has failed. He further said that, they only wanted to do things where there is corruption. _ On March 13, 2014 – Union Minister Ananth Kumar said: “To be honest, I would not take pride in stating that I was part of the Aadhar programme. In fact I would be ashamed of it.” April 2, 2014, Spokesperson Prakash Javdekar said, “It (Aadhaar) has served no purpose. They have issued cards to illegal migrants. We want citizenship cards”. Meenakshi Lekhi questioned the UIDAI chairman Nandan Nilekanis claims on Aadhaars achievements and termed the programme as a fraud perpetrated on the people of the country. October 22, 2014 Shri Arun Jaitley said, “that the scheme will help him cut government subsidy by 2000 crores. In the same interview he had very categorically stated that it is a logically economic idea and no one party had a copyright on the idea”. July 9, 2014 - Giving indications that the new government is likely to continue Aadhaar enrolments, a sum of Rs. 2,039 crore has been provided in the Budget for the Unique Identification Project (UIP) in the current fiscal year. Source: NDTV In Nov, 2014 – The Modi Government through its Home Ministry in a complete U-turn from its earlier stand, came out in full support of the Aadhaar scheme saying it will facilitate anytime, anywhere, anyhow authentication to its beneficiaries. In a letter sent by the Union Home Ministry to states it said that - “Since Aadhaar is based on the demographic and biometric information of an individual, it eliminates the threat of any fraud and bogus activity.”
