#5/10 – Zanzibar Seductive songs and smart suits Taarab is to Swahili music what coconut milk is to Swahili cuisine. Just over a century ago the sultan of Zanzibar apparently sent his court musicians to Egypt and probably India to gain experience. In the process they invented and/or absorbed the style now known as taarab. It basically involves Arabic instruments and poignant Swahili songs of yearning and love, with a highly syncopated, seductively drowsy rhythm, which like Zanzibar itself can be hypnotic. The large male orchestras often dress in formal western dinner suits.
