#5: If I Have To Go by Tom Waits As I’ve stated before, with a Tom Waits song, you’re never truly sure which Waits you’re getting. It could be creepy Waits, wailing Waits, shouting Waits, crooning Waits. But of all the songs I’ve heard over and over again, his most heartbreaking and tender song is this beautifully simple little tune from his collection set “Orphans: Bastards, Bawlers and Brawlers”. “If I Have to Go” is barely 2 minutes in length, making it the second shortest song on this list (The first being “You” by Bad Religion, but that’s Punk so it’s understandable). But there is not a single wasted moment in the entire piece. The lyrics are universally understandable and the melody is so simple I’m sure even I could figure it out if you sat me down in front of a piano for a day. But like most of the songs on “Bawlers”, Waits has delivered another heartbreaking ode to a love lost, which anyone rarely does better than him. If “If I Have To Go” doesn’t bring a small little whimper to your chin, you are truly made of stone.
