(51 AI Bn) Saturday 7 October 1944 At 0330, the 2nd Bn of the 104th Inf. reported that they were completely dug in on our position. This morning at 0800, Brig. Gen. Dager called up and ordered all vehicles of the Bn be withdrawn to the vicinity of the Bn CP. This was completed by 1300, with the vehicles moving back singlely. Harassing enemy shell-fire was placed on the route of the vehicle withdrawal, but the move was accomplished without casualties. At 1600, orders were issued to the companies to withdraw, by platoon, commencing at dark, to the vehicles, preparatory to moving to Serres. The march to Serres was scheduled to be by platoons also. with the I and R Platoon posting guides and Lt. Pomfret in charge of disposition of the units in the assembly area. No reason was given for the Bn moving to Serres, but CCB had ordered us to that assembly area. The Bn started to move out, by platoon, at 1850, with Bn HQ, minus the CO, S-3 and Communications Section, in the lead. The I & R preceeded the Bn by an hour to post guides for the route. As the platoons came off the line, they marched back to their vehicles and moved slowly to the new assembly area. They passed through Arracourt, Athienville and Serres. Troops of the 26th Div. were on the road going to the front. Part of the recon element of that division was lost and parked. All platoons were on the road by 2230, when the CO, S-3 and Communication Section left at the end of the column, after completely closing out the CP. The entire Bn was bivouacked in an area just south of Serres by midnight. We were in Corps Reserve. There were two casualties in the Bn today, one killed and one wounded. Eleven men returned to duty.
