#6 Favorite Album / EP of 2014 - St. Vincent - ST. VINCENT Annie Clark took another big jump toward art rock superstardom with her latest, the self-titled ST. VINCENT. While I love the album, and especially loved the live performance at House of Blues in March, I can’t help but think her last album, STRANGE MERCY might have been her creative peak, and ACTOR, the album before that will always be my personal favorite. But that’s ok. As a young new friend of mine said recently, when you realize it’s not all about you, you start to become a grown-up. That seems to be what St. Vincent is doing with this album - maturing and making the artistic process more about serving the song (though a part of me wishes she had done all that without the bleaching of hair, and wearing of costumes). And wow, there are some great songs on this album! There is a lot of experimenting going on here with analog synths and making precise almost labratory-like sounds, and while that takes steps away from what drew me to her in the first place (the chamber strings and deceptive prettiness / underlying darkness of ACTOR) she is one of the few artists I trust enough to say “OK, I’ll go along with you on this ride.” https://youtube/watch?v=mVAxUMuhz98
