#685 TOMMY MCMORRIS! In fifth grade, Tommy and I were once again in separate classes, but come sixth grade, in 78, we were in the same room and he had become steadily more unpredictable. If you said you enjoyed sharpening your pencil, Tommy would want to challenge you on it. Tommy lost his social studies textbook, a publication I dont recall at all, some silly little meaningless piece of work. Someone stole it out of my desk, Mrs. Kilbourne, he told the teacher. I have no idea how long this continued. Weeks? A month? Ive been trying to recall what class we were in. I think we were in a trailer. Sixth grade was massively confusing as to classrooms and schedules, as the classes were condensed that year from four rooms to three; 6-Special, 6A, 6B and 6C became 6A, 6B and 6C. The dumpsters were outside the cafeteria in the round-about where teachers parked at this time. So we sat in class and watched a young girl leaning over into the dumpster as if she were trying to retrieve something. Slowly she teetered over into the dumpster, her feet in the air, then she came back, and repeated the process again. We laughed at her display. The next morning, Mrs. Kilbourne came down the hallway to where we stood, heading toward Tommy. She held out a textbook to him. Turns out, this is what the unknown girl had been retrieving from the dumpster. There was gum on the back, if I recall correctly. Possibly other damage. Im charging you a dollar, she said to him. She departed. Im not going to pay it, he said sullenly. Dont know if he ever did. Sixth grade, in 78, was Tommys last year at Byram. Like so many others, he was rerouted to another school.
