#72 After what seems like hours I return to my car, I take out my cellphone from my purse to see the time and instead I see 5 missed calls from my mother in-law. Immediately I call her back, mum nonku:” hello my baby” me:” hi ma, is everthing fine that side?” mum nonku:” I think you need to get here quick” me:” what is wrong ma? Are the girls ok” mum nonku:” the girls are fine, its… sandile” me:” what about him?” mum nonku:” just get here my baby, I will explain everything once you are here” me:” ok ma, I will get there as soon as I can” mum nonku:” ok, bye” me:” bye” whatever it is about sandile part of me is sipping on some cold ice water with lemon not bothered what could be wrong with him, whereas the other half is on panic mode and vreally worried. I start the car and go to lunga’s place. I get there, tell him that I need to go to Port Shepston quickly and I take a quick bath to wear a summer dress and sandles that I had packed, I always back extra clothes which come in handy sometimes like today. When Im done lunga walks me to my car, me:” bye I will call you on my way back” lunga:” ok, drive safely” me:” I always do” we kiss briefly, I buckle up and leave. The hour drive to port shepston seems longer than normal, I pull up at the zuma household driveway and sandile and anele’s cars are parked outside. i’m expecting to hear the girls laughter and noise in the house but there is none. Now Im worried, I knock before entering the house. There is nobody to meet me, so since I know my way around I walk to the lounge and as I enter all eyes fall on me. guilt overcomes me as I think of what I’ve been up to a few hours ago. Sandile is sitting on the double couch our eyes meet, his eyes are blood red. Either from a lack of sleep or from crying. But sandile and crying? I will go with the lack of sleep. Mr Zee is seating on his favourite couch and mum nonku is sitting on a couch opposite the one sandile is sitting on. Me:” good afternoon, the door was open so…” mum nonku:” no need to explain my baby, how was the drive?” me:” it was ok” mr zee:” its good to see you lethokuhle” me:” likewise dad” mum nonku:” take a seat, would you like something to drink?” me:” some juice would be nice” I make my way to the couch mum nonku is sitting on and I seat beside her, mum nonku:” Freda!” within a second Freda comes to her aid, mum nonku:” some refreshments for all of us please” Freda walks out, mum nonku:” my baby go and seat beside your husband” I reluctantly get off the couch and seat beside sandile. Mr zee:” lethokuhle your mother called you here because we both decided you need to be here and listen to what your husband has to say. Sandile came here to apologise to us and requested to accompany him to your parents and apologise to them as well. That is good and all but we feel that he should apologise to you too, especially after he informed us that he beat you up so bad you ended up in hospital” mum nonku:” my baby why didn’t you tell us about this? I feel like we as sandile’s parents have failed you more than our son did. Themba and I have been trying to get to where sandile picked this habit from, he was raised to respect and protect women and thinking of the damages that he has done makes me realise that we failed him as his parents. We are really sorry you had to go through that” mr zee:” sandile, here is your wife talk to her, tell her what you told us” sandile shifts uncomfortably on the couch, sandile:” mamkhize, I don’t even know where to begin. I failed myself, our family but most importantly I failed you. time and time again I took advantage of your love and commitment to us. Instead of working things through with you when we weren’t seeing eye to eye I took the easy way out and I left. Things just got out of hand and I didn’t know what to do to get through to you. I would like to apologise for the physical, mental and emotional pain I’ve caused you.” his voice is shakey, I had my head down the whole time and when I look up mr zee is shaking his head looking at his son. The lady of the house is close to tears, I’m left unmoved by sandile’s speech, in fact Im declaring this the end of a significant chapter of my life. Nothing he says will change my mind…
