I see it as a basic map of a spiritual life, containing the most important principles, and answering all the basic philosophical questions. This book deals with 5 subjects: 1. Prakriti - Material nature., Its 3 modes, as well as other aspects and laws of this material world are explained. 2. Kala - The Time. It explains how the time goes in cycles within the process of partial and total creation and annihilation. 3. Atma - an individual soul, and what it resprents in relation to The Absolute 4. Bhagavan - The Absolute Truth, including its 3 aspects: Brahman, Paramatma and Bhagavan. 5. Karma - activities of a living being, its result, or the fruits that we experience, and the mechanics of it. My personal experience with the BG, is that its a great remedy for the difficult times, especially for the people like me, entangled in the dealings of the material world. Just by reading that book, in the evening, takes a lot of stress from my life, much more effectively than about anything else, and the amazing thing is that it has never failed to work for me until now. I have read it quite a few times, and in selective chapters as well. For me this book has certainly proved to be really deep, and the interest only increases with time, unlike other literature. It seems to be one of the most challenging and yet useful materials to find application for. The actual realization of the contents comes very gradually after a long period of time of continually reading and becoming more and more absorbed in it. Bhagavad Gita is actually considered to be a king of all knowledge, has thousands of translations, however about 98% are unfortunately rendered useless by unqualified translators and commentators, who were unable to unlock its deep wisdom. This is one of the rare authentic versions, delivered through a chain of disciplic succession by His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada. Bhagavad Gita As It Is is a bonafide translation and commentary of Srila A. C. Bhakti Vedanta Swami Prabhupada, acharya founder of International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), who brought this vedic knowledge to the west, and established the standards of spiritual adapted for the modern society, through demonstrating own personal example, and thus receiving the title Acharya. It was studied by many great scientists and philosophers of all times, and a lot of other famous people of the world, including A. Einstein, H. Ford, etc. Here are some great quotes about BG, that I have found: ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ When I read the Bhagavad-Gita and reflect about how God created this universe everything else seems so superfluous. ~ Albert Einstein The idea that man is like unto an inverted tree seems to have been current in by gone ages. The link with Vedic conceptions is provided by Plato in his Timaeus in which it states... behold we are not an earthly but a heavenly plant. ~ Carl Jung The Bhagavad-Gita is a true scripture of the human race, a living creation rather than a book, with a new message for every age and a new meaning for every civilization. ~ Rishi Aurobindo When doubts haunt me, when disappointments stare me in the face, and I see not one ray of hope on the horizon, I turn to Bhagavad-Gita and find a verse to comfort me; and I immediately begin to smile in the midst of overwhelming sorrow. Those who meditate on the Gita will derive fresh joy and new meanings from it every day. ~ Mahatma Gandhi In order to approach a creation as sublime as the Bhagavad-Gita with full understanding it is necessary to attune our soul to it. ~ Rudolph Steiner Adi Shankara: From a clear knowledge of the Bhagavad-Gita all the goals of human existence become fulfilled. Bhagavad-Gita is the manifest quintessence of all the teachings of the Vedic scriptures. Ralph Waldo Emerson: I owed a magnificent day to the Bhagavad-gita. It was the first of books; it was as if an empire spoke to us, nothing small or unworthy, but large, serene, consistent, the voice of an old intelligence which in another age and climate had pondered and thus disposed of the same questions which exercise us. Henry David Thoreau: In the morning I bathe my intellect in the stupendous and cosmogonal philosophy of the Bhagavad-gita, in comparison with which our modern world and its literature seem puny and trivial. Prime Minister Nehru: The Bhagavad-Gita deals essentially with the spiritual foundation of human existence. It is a call of action to meet the obligations and duties of life; yet keeping in view the spiritual nature and grander purpose of the universe. Aldous Huxley: The Bhagavad-Gita is the most systematic statement of spiritual evolution of endowing value to mankind. It is one of the most clear and comprehensive summaries of perennial philosophy ever revealed; hence its enduring value is subject not only to India but to all of humanity. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Thank You for taking the time to read all this, hope You enjoy this great masterpiece.
