#8: O My Heart by Mother Mother When I moved from Calgary to Vancouver, me and my future roommate Brad took a long road trip with some friends, hauling a trailer with all of our stuff. It was a lengthy but enjoyable trip. Sometime not long after crossing over into British Columbia, Brad gave me his headphones and said “Here, this is a band I think you’d really enjoy”. It seems so appropriate now that my first exposure to Mother Mother was only a few hours after landing in the place that would become my new hometown. A Vancouver based band, Mother Mother grew up right alongside me. I was hooked the second “O My Heart” started playing, and it’s namesake album is one of those near perfect albums where every song is a jem. A week or so after the move was official, I got to see MM perform live at UBC, where I even got to chat briefly with Ryan Guldemond. Now, MM has become a huge indie rock phenom (in Canada anyway), and it makes me feel special to have been there so close to the beginning. “O MY Heart” still remains my favorite track by the band, for sentimental reasons mostly, but it’s also an astoundingly complex song with the trademark MM Killer harmonies. They are the band I will forever associate with Vancouver and one who’s records I will always look forward too.
