#9/10 – Zanzibar The Zanzibar Christmas Tree Towns in Zanzibar, like others throughout the tropics, have many exotic trees and shrubs, planted for their shade and/or decorative blossoms. One of the most striking is that splendid native of Madagascar, the flamboyant, one of several ‘flame trees’. It is at its best towards December, when its scarlet blossoms contrast gloriously with the feathery, bright green leaves. The time of year and ‘Christmassy’ colour combination have earned the flamboyant its colloquial name, the Zanzibar Christmas tree.
