“A Gift From Heaven” Today, some time before morning, I seemed to wake, though in some ways I still seemed to be asleep. There was the most wonderful aroma coming from somewhere—a kind of mixture of Gardenias and Cattleya orchids, and the light fragrance was everywhere. “Charles, honey! Your Grandpa and me have missed you so much!” My Grandma Cassie had come running out into the field across from the Hazy barn to hug me. I loved Grandma so much, and had missed her all this time! The field was blazing with flowers, ones I knew the name of and plenty that I didn’t. Colors—some usual and some I haven’t any vocabulary for…There’s Grandpa! Before this, he had been reserved but he too put his arms around me, and I knew happiness and love I hadn’t felt in so long. And there they all were: my Bradfords and my Wills, shining in the soft sunlight… Now others were coming. Marshall Bradford, Brother Rick, Dad, and Mom, Pody Lovely, Grover, Josephine, Janie, Gypsy, and Jess Daniel, Lonnie Moorehead, Shelby Webb, Judy Kyle and Bylo, Trusby and Mary Neece, Pood and Norma Webb, Jimmy, LaFon, and Roscoe Pettry, Ray Pettry, King Pettry and his family, Finley Massey and his family, Miss Dietz, Buster Miller, Opal Davis, Junebug and Susie Aranjo, Helen and Frank Perry and their parents, James Scott, Gifford and Parker Webb’s families, Clifford and Janie Lively, Freddie Long, Hattie Richmond, Mike Vergis, Clyde Montgomery, Clyde Murdock and his family, Jenny Barefield, Doug and Denver Walker, Gary Hizer, Andy Green and his family, Maxine and Duffy Green, Harry Ray Holly and his family, Russell Alderman, Junior Stone, Jimmy and Edith Burnette, Clarence Clay, Aubrey Ward, the Sharp family, Mrs. Boyd, the Belcher family, Lavina Stamper, Mabel Gross, Inez Webb, Lavina Stamper, Chessie Bennett, Claude Worley, Arlene Chambers, Gerald Dickens, all the Sheets family, all the Curry Family, all the Stewart family, all the Dickens family, Mrs. Sifers, Stanton, Janice and Louise, Jeff and Sara Williams, Helen and John… On and on they came, so many that I had forgotten. So many I had not seen in such a long time! I knew somehow that we were all connected and that all of us loved each other at some very deep level, a connectedness none of us could have guessed. The sky became intensely bright, and a female voice said, “Yes, you love one another. It is good! Then, sadly, the sunlight and the fragrance faded, the everyday sounds of the Weather Channel and the aroma of coffee penetrated my dream, not quite dissolving all of the sleepy peace, happiness, and contentment from my still not-alert psyche. I was literally walking on sunshine, knowing that I loved and was loved. Lord, I know this day will be good!
