“A Hard Day’s Night” It’s Friday morning across the WPAC and winter continues to impose itself this morning as cooler weather settles in across most of the region, while at the same time, interests to the south continue to watch the tropics for a possible storm system late next week. NORTH Residents of China, Korea, and Japan are feeling the slightly moderated chill this morning as winter weather systems continue to cruise through the region. Residents of Beijing find a slightly warmer start to the day today, settling in at -4C/25F. It’s also just a bit warmer this morning in Seoul, as folks there wake up to a chilly -6C/21F. Shanghai looks at a carbon copy of yesterday’s start with a low of 1C/34F, and Tokyo is also off to a slightly warmer start this morning, as the sun rises there to a low of 6C/43F. When temperatures start to rebound so quickly following a storm’s passing, you can bet the weather pattern is active, and such is the case for the northern tier of the region. A large upper-level low pressure system will continue to help pump in waves of cooler air and the associated disturbances for the next few days as winter firms its grasp on the region. CENTRAL The central third of the WPAC region is THE place to be these days, and cities of this region are off to a great start this morning. Taipei and Hong Kong residents are waking up to a cool, but comfortable, low of 14C/57F, while a bit further south, those living in Hanoi see a wonderful start to the day, starting things off at 15C/59F. Moderated winter weather systems will continue to push through the central portions of the WPAC region, keeping things nice and cool for the next several days. SOUTH Residents of the southern third of the region have nothing to complain about, mostly. A little rainfall has plagued portions of the southern Philippines for the past 24 hours, thanks to a washed out cold front and an infusion of some tropical moisture. Otherwise, cooler and drier conditions are settling into these areas as well behind a strong, but moderated, cold front. In the Philippines, Manila and Davao City residents are waking up to a comfortable low of 23C/73F this morning, while folks in Ho Chi Minh find it just a tad cooler at 22C/72F. Cloudy skies and rainfall continue to plague portions of Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei, as a trough of low pressure continues to slowly undulate just southeast of Singapore. Residents of Brunei start the day with clouds and showers, and a low of 25C.77F. Moderated frontal systems will continue to move through the southern tier of the WPAC for the next several days, bringing in cooler and drier air to the region. Some possible tropical troubles loom on the horizon late next week, as I will cover more in the next section. TROPICS The tropics are quiet, relatively speaking, as the I.T.C.Z. (Inter-tropical Convergence Zone) remains in a low activity phase. Given the time of year, and the continued infusion of cooler air from the north, this is quite expected. There are several disorganized trough features embedded in the I.T.C.Z., and the islands are dealing with plenty of moisture and shower activity. Guam is off to a cooler start this morning with a low of 21C/70F. Palau is also seeing some cooler air filter in as they wake up to a morning low of 23C/73F. Uniformly warm air is settled in across the remainder of the region, as Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Majuro all start the day with a comfortable low of 24C/75F. 91W INVEST has been taken off the books, officially speaking. There remains quite a bit of troughiness with the leftovers, though, and computer forecast models are sticking to earlier predictions of system formation. As for now, there’s not much to mention other than numerous showers in the region. We will keep an eye out for any other developments. Have a great weekend!
