“A Journey for Jacob’s Sons” Gen 42:5 And the sons of Israel came to buy corn among those that came: for the famine was in the land of Canaan. 6 And Joseph was the governor over the land, and he it was that sold to all the people of the land: and Josephs brethren came, and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth. 7 And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spake roughly unto them; and he said unto them, Whence come ye? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food. 8 And Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew not him. 9 And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and said unto them, Ye are spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come. Jacob looked upon his sons in verse one and told ask them why they were idle about the crisis that they were facing with food for the family. They had wives and children now with much responsibility. It was as if food would drop down from the sky or something; or it was someone else’s trouble to get them food. But this situation was a test for them in many ways and they were about to experience some soul-searching emotions and thinking in the days ahead. This journey would reveal their envious, jealous nature but would soften those hard hearts as well. God will take us on a journey which teaches us who we are not and what we should be. Usually it will be through people that have hurt us or those that we have hurt. Facing fears of being found out and the real person emerging can cause much anxiety. We have heard of panic attacks with many people these days and much of it has to do with phobias and past experiences. Jeremiah 17:9-10 “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it? I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins (emotions), even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.” The 10 sons of Jacob does not know what is about to hit them as they travel to the land of Egypt. When all is well with our lives we don’t need God but when things like food or some necessity gets in our way, we get stressed or our world gets rocked. The Lord tries the reins or the emotions of man throughout life. There are three areas of the soul; the mind which is what we should think with, the emotions, what we feel with and the will, how we make choices in our lives. God’s word should rule our lives and when we take over with our decisions, things start to go wrong. Remember, our hearts do two things to us without guidance from the WORD, we are deceived and desperately wicked. So these two things are where these 10 brothers find themselves. They try to fake it while trying to figure life out but the problems keep happening in the same areas of life. So God tries our lives continually to show us where we are inside. Circumstances that come our way reveal to us our own deception and how we manipulate, intimidate or try to dominate the crisis to make others think we know what we are doing. God says, “Another test for you my child!” This really does wear us down so we will look to the Lord and His direction through His word. “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” Jacob’s sons would learn some hard things about themselves in the meeting with their long lost brother Joseph.
