~A Mighty Angel~ Have you ever wondered how many angels there are? God knows, of course, because He created them. Revelation 5:11 makes this numerical reference: “… the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands” (KJV). Hebrews 12:22 says “… an innumerable company of angels” (KJV). There is an immense amount of information about them in the Bible. They are very fascinating and mysterious. Hebrews 1:14 tells us they are spiritual messengers sent forth to help and care for those who are to receive salvation. God gives them charge over His children for guidance and protection in all kinds of circumstances (Psalm 91:12-13) and they encamp around us to deliver us (Psalm 34:7). They take on many forms and guises, and various assignments. Psalm 103:20 reveals they excel in strength, hearken to the voice of God’s word and do His commandments. They travel at tremendous speed (Daniel 9:21). Numerous ones participated in Jesus’ birth, resurrection and ascension. And they will accompany Him when He comes back to set up His kingdom and to be glorified in His saints (2 Thessalonians 1:7-10). There are hierarchies or ranks of angels. The chief ones are called archangels. Two of them are named in the Bible: Gabriel and Michael. I’m going to focus on Michael, spoken of in Jude 1:9. Revelation 12:7-9 relates that the dragon (Satan) with his angels caused a war in heaven by rebelling against God. Michael, with his angels, fought against them, “And the Dragon lost the battle and was forced from heaven … and was thrown down onto the earth with all his army” (TLB). Satan was no match for Michael, let alone God. The beloved prophet Daniel shares a fascinating story about Michael. Daniel had been fasting and praying for three weeks concerning the welfare of his nation, Israel, in the last days. He was very perplexed and disturbed that he hadn’t heard from God. Then an angel arrived with an amazing message. He told Daniel his request had been heard in heaven from the very first day and that he, the angel, had started out to bring the answer but the evil angel ruling Persia had blocked his way for 21 days until Michael showed up and helped him through, so he could deliver God’s answer to Daniel’s prayer (Daniel 10:2-14). Wow, what tremendous power God has given to Michael. Part of the reassuring answer reads “And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book” (Daniel 12:1 KJV). This story reminds me of some words in a song (the essence), that we barely begin to see God’s almighty wonders down here. It will take an eternity. By Jane Bradfield All Rights Reserved
